Railways going the mobile way!

The day is not far when your train ticket will be replaced by your own mobile phone. Moreover, you will be free from the cumbersome process of booking tickets at the Railway ticket counter.Rakesh Tandon, managing director, Indian Railway Tourism and Railway Corporation (IRCTC), informed that in near future people will be able to travel without any paper ticket as all ticket related information will be transferred to their mobile phones.

On the sidelines of a seminar on Indian Railways propelling tourism growth, Tandon said that IRCTC is making an optimal use of new media in promoting its various products and services, and is also working towards making the ticket booking process more consumer friendly.
Speaking to My Mobile on the potential of mobile ticketing, Tandon noted, “We have recently forayed into m-ticketing in which you can book the ticket using internet service through mobile. Though currently consumer has to travel with printed ticket but in near future we are talking about options where consumer can just carry his/her mobile and do the travelling.”
“We already have an online portal in which we are offering most of our services like payment, e-ticketing, special trains, catering options etc., and a lot of people of are conveniently using the service,” he said. IRCTC has more than one crore online users and is exploring the potential further.
“Our mobile ticketing option has been launched recently and we are receiving good response from the consumer. Approximately 2000-3000 customers are registering on daily basis through the mobile application. We are in talks with the ministry and are looking at ways to use this medium further,” Tandon added.
The IRCTC mobile application enables consumers to check availability, book or cancel tickets, check PNR status, apart from availing other services.
